Alcohol attributable admissions by Trust - South East Coast Strategic Health Authority

Recent analysis by Alcohol Concern (Making alcohol a health priority - Opportunities to reduce alcohol harm and rising costs, 2011) reported that the 'number of hospital admissions due to alcohol misuse was 1.1 million in 2009/10, a 100% increase since 2002/03. If the rise continues unchecked, by the end of the current Parliament a staggering 1.5 million people will be admitted to hospital every year' This indicator provides a summary view of the number of admissions attributable to alcohol for each PCT by sex.

Measure: Alcohol attributable admission rates

Description:
Directly age-standardised rate of alcohol attributable admissions per 100,000 population.
Definition:
  • Alcohol attributable admissions: sum of alcohol attributable fractions
  • PCT/LA Population: total population within each PCT/LA
  • Standardised Rate: Directly age-standardised rate per 100,000 population
  • LCL: Lower 95% confidence limit
  • UCL: Upper 95% confidence limit
Technical definition

Alcohol attributable admissions:

Each admission (based on the dominant diagnosis episode) is assigned an attributable fraction based on the ICD10 diagnosis codes, age and sex of the patient (see table 1 below). Where an admission has more than one of the below diagnosis codes, the highest attributable fraction is used. These fractions are then summed to obtain admission totals by sex and five-year age band.

Directly age-standardised rates:

The directly age-standardised rate is the rate of events that would occur in a standard population if the population had the same age-specific rates of the subject population. See Explanation of statistical methods used in the Compendium (http://www.nchod.nhs.uk).
